Fitness STAR - Categories / Attire / Judging Recap

Hello Fitness STARS,

Fitness STAR Model Search Montreal is just under 3 weeks away on November 28th, 2009 and we are getting pretty excited for what is going to be one amazing event!!! We are getting quite a few inquires about categories, attire and judging so here is a recap for all of you to learn more:

Fitness STAR Categories:

• Athletic Fitness Model (female and male)

The Athletic Fitness Model division is meant to showcase models who are fit and toned. Successful models will have visible muscle separation, and a healthy body fat to lean muscle ratio. Body fat should not be as low as that of bodybuilders or Muscular Fitness Models. Striations within individual muscles should not be visible. Models should have good symmetry, proportions and display ample confidence and personality in a tasteful fashion. An attainable look is desired for mainstream fitness modeling. Attention to personal grooming will play an important role in being successful in this division.

• Muscular Fitness Model (female and male)

The Muscular Fitness Model category is meant to showcase a model who is more muscled than the Athletic Fitness Model, although still not as striated as a bodybuilder. Visible fullness and separation between muscle groups are rewarded. Although these models will show significantly more muscle mass than the Athletic Fitness Model, they should keep in mind that a natural look is necessary to be successful in mainstream fitness modeling. The Muscular Fitness Model must have good symmetry, proportions and display ample confidence and personality in a tasteful fashion.

• Masters Fitness Model – 40 or over (female and male)

The Masters Fitness Model category will follow the same guidelines and criteria as the Athletic Fitness Model division.

Fitness STAR Competitor Attire:

Sport Wear Round

• Athletic wear is chosen by the model, and should show off their physique in a tasteful manner. Models should chose colors that compliment their skin tone and are aesthetically pleasing. It is not necessary to spend a lot of money on an outfit. Smart choices (color, cut) are more important. Theme-wear, props or costumes are not permitted.
• Athletic shoes or bare feet are permitted only. This ensures no model is advantaged by heeled footwear. It also offers a different perspective to the judges and media in attendance, and further demonstrates model versatility.

Swim Wear Round

Females: two piece bikini-style posing suit will be worn for the swimsuit round (no thongs permitted). We suggest a custom-made competition suit. Many models choose suits adorned with crystals.
• Only small earrings and wedding rings permitted.
• Clear heels. We suggest 4 inches for ease of walking, however up to 6 inches are permitted.

Males: posing trunks or boxer-brief styles are permitted. Be sure that the judges can see the muscle tone in your legs.

Fitness STAR Judging:

Each Fitness STAR Model Search division will include 2 rounds of competition. Fitness STAR Model Search events will not have a prejudge/evening show distinction. The events will run as one performance. There will be no routines.

To make your mark as an Athletic Fitness Model or Muscular Fitness Model, you need to possess the "entire package." Judges are looking for an overall athletic appearance and a fresh “marketable” look. Competitors should appear healthy and vibrant with noticeable muscle tone and symmetry. Muscular Fitness Models will be more muscled and have a fuller appearance in the muscle bellies than the less-heavily muscled look of an Athletic Fitness Model.

Both Athletic Fitness Models and Muscular Fitness Models should appear healthy and vibrant with noticeable muscle tone and symmetry; a more pronounced muscle development in the latter.

All models must also be versatile in order to be successful in this industry. That means that they must be able to show their bodies confidently in both swim wear and athletic wear.

Competitors are ranked against each other as would be in a bodybuilding show. This dramatically reduces the margin of error in judging when groups are large.

Sport Wear (1/2 of overall score)

The sport wear round is more relaxed than the swim wear round. Models will be walking a runway, and will not be performing quarter turns in this round. Models also should not be performing mandatory poses as would bodybuilders. Judges will be looking for marketability by utilizing the following criteria:

• confidence (poise, smile)
• execution of runway walk and demonstration of personality
• grooming: skin tone, hair, make-up, suit selection
• overall presentation/impression

Your choice of clothing should compliment your physique. Props and accessories are not permitted. Use your personality and confidence as a model to separate you from the rest.

Swim Wear (1/2 of overall score)

The swim wear round is more formal than the swim wear round. Models will be walking a runway and performing quarter turns in this round and the judges will be looking closely at each models physique.

• Models will be performing a series of quarter turns so that the judges can see the models from all angles. Models will be expected to stand with their feet together and flat on the floor. When asked to turn, they should be looking in the direction they have turned.
• Athletes musculature (size, definition as outlined in divisional expectations), proportions (no body part should be more developed than another) and symmetry (equal development between all muscle groups from top to bottom, left to right, and front to back) are assessed.
• Grooming and overall appearance is assessed for marketability.

Please Note:

Demerit points will be allocated to an Athletic Fitness Model who is excessively muscled or whose striations within a muscle belly are visible. Separation between major muscle groups, however, should be visible.

Demerit points will be allocated to a Muscular Fitness Model who shows any signs of drug use and/or is deemed unmarketable. It is important to remember that versatility in Fitness Modeling depends on the breadth of audience who can identify with you.

Although we are well aware that there is a niche market for heavily muscled individuals, it is relatively small in comparison to the general fitness arena in mass media, and therefore limiting to both the model and the agency.
